The Chicken or the Egg?

July 14, 2015

Today, while I was giving an acupuncture treatment addressing a couple of interrelated areas of pain, the patient asked me which caused which. My answer was that so often in the West we get caught in the trap of looking for a single cause when there might not be one at all. Did one area cause the pain and dysfunction in the other or vice versa? Sometimes it’s not quite that simple; and often, clinically – from an acupuncture perspective – it isn’t that important. We can get caught up on the question of which came first, the chicken or the egg? Or we can simply see them as co-arising, mutually interdependent, and interrelated. It doesn’t matter whether or not the chicken or the egg came first; we’re having grilled chicken and scrambled eggs.
